SUMMARY
In compiling the production history of Marisol, I learned the two key considerations are keeping a sense of dark humor to retain Rivera's vision and the challenging nature of the abnormal plot structure. Some critics appreciated the sense that the play is made up of vignettes. Some were able to find and were pleased with the more traditional plot arc of a hero's journey. Some were frustrated with the lack of clarity of action and structure, but were still impressed by the production quality and spectacle.

It is also worth noting that many theater companies produced Marisol as their inaugural production, while most others chose the play to mark a change in their style or to usher in something new.

There was a dearth of available reviews and productions between 1998 and 2007 which I found fascinating for a play so concerned with the millennium. From the tone of the reviews, I would argue that the play felt relevant up until 1998 as an expression of fear of the future and then it wasn't until 2007 that there was enough distance from the year 2000 that the play returned to relevancy as a piece of recent history that was worthy of reflection.
